The HP G71-340us is outside the box and plugged in. This is what happens next.
The first boot
It took about twenty minutes to go from turn-on to get "control" of the computer - to see the standard desktop screen where you have complete control. This included the following tasks:
* creating a user account
* registering the computer
* network setup - it correctly found my wired internet
I declined the "send anonymous information" partly because I find it invasive, and partly because I don't like being "free labor" after I just paid for this computer!
I did not activate Norton either. It will be removed later on during the de-tox phase :)

First few actions
After that, I did the following things:
0. Prompted to installed Java updates and I agreed
1. Installed Firefox
2. Installed Irfanview (now includes Google Toolbar, so be sure to decline if you don't want)
3. Installed Microsoft Security Essentials Anti-Virus (I wanted to test it out)
4. Took a snapshot of the Windows Experience Index and list of running processes, which you can see right below...
